What’s New with Canadian Idol!
So much for the elite eight, it's time to get it down to the super six, or something like that. The chopping block is all warmed up and ready to go following Monday's Motown show.Ben brings out our eight remaining Idols to start the show. Hey, great idea! Oops, now we're into awkward small talk about The Temptations last night. Quick, someone roll video. Whew, mercifully, we're into the video recap of Monday night's show. The standout performance of the night was Toya Alexis' "If You Really Love Me".

The latest recap
Back from the video recap, Ben asks Farley if the Idols did Motown justice and Farley politely, and accurately, says it was "a tough gig" for them. Zack adds a riddle to the proceedings with his answer: "Sic transit gloria...How fast fame flies away." No doubt that flew over many heads, including our politely smiling host's. How do we know this is Canadian Idol? The word 'politely' has been used twice in the last three sentences. Back to Zack's fancy book-learnin' comment, though. He's probably referring to how drastically some of the competitors were cut down last night, some of whom had never received much criticism from the judges previously. Tyler and Audrey spring to mind. Sass is busy, apparently, with a new CD out, a concert gig with the Stones a few weeks ago and judging our fine little broadcast. If you take the time to add that up in your head, I presume most readers spend more time at their offices than is included in that list, but I digress. We're checking out Sass' CD release party. The Idols appear to be having a good time watching Sass rock out. The Scribe can't be the only one who notices the similar appearances of Sass' drummer and Billy Klippert, right?Out of the Sass package, we get the Idols singing a Temptations classic, "Ain't Too Proud To Beg". Seeing Jenny playfully push Tyler and later seeing Toya send Billy on his way are a pair of the more endearing images from this performance. All in all, great work from the Idols. We come back from commercial to hear about the Idols' trip to see Mariah Carey in concert last Thursday at the Air Canada Centre. Mikey is so star-struck and the Idols get to spend some time backstage with the perma-smiling pop diva. Cynical will just assume that maybe that segment worked better for Mariah Carey fans. Finally, it's time for results. Oh, wait, Jon is interrupting now from in the audience. In his smudgy looking shirt, Jon draws some laughs, poking fun of "pretty boy" Ben in "Fancyland". Another solid minute from Jon.Ben opens up the results envelopes with the news that 1.8 million votes were received. Toya is up first. After Monday night's show, don't even pretend that she's headed for the stage, Ben. He doesn't and Toya survives another week. Ryan is up next and, considering he received the most praise next to Toya on Monday, it's no surprise that we'll get to see him next week too. We move on to Mikey who has a Dead Man Walking thing going on. He's been criticized quite a bit in the past couple of shows and Mikey's not hiding his dread very well. He's going to take the stage as one of tonight's bottom three. The hometown crowd naturally boos that decision.Next in line is Jenny. Is there a sweeter reaction than the one Jenny gives when she's told she's staying, the way those eyes dance? Anyway, the lightning rod of message board opinions will keep on singing for us next week. Audrey took some criticism for the first time on Monday night, but she's still in. If he does the math, Tyler can't be liking his chances right now, and by the look on his face, he appears to know what is coming. After being skewered by Farley and Zack Monday night, though, he's headed for the stage. Billy and Gary remain, with one spot remaining in the bottom three, but not before a commercial break.Okay, the bills are paid and we're ready to find out who will join Mikey and Tyler on stage. Billy had some issues while singing a softer song and Gary was ripped for a poor performance. Billy is in the bottom three and shock doesn't begin to describe the look on his face at hearing the news. He looks at Ben three times before moving to the stage. The Scribe thinks the judges aren't going to be particularly thrilled by this recent turn of events. Jake's "dumbfounded", Sass thinks "it's totally amazing" (and not in a good way by the tone of her voice), Farley says he's "surprised" and Zack saves us from the "It is what it is" abyss by complimenting the three "gentlemen" on stage. Classy stuff from Zack. No, really. The first to leave us tonight, amidst outraged screams from the crowd, is Mikey. Mikey is so passionate about performing that emotion just oozes out of him. As Sass said earlier in the competition, "(he) could sing the phone book and I'd still be in love with you". It's that kind of emotional connection that had Mikey fluttering teen hearts everywhere, but he'll have to work on his vocal strength in order to take the next step in his musical career. As a side note here, can we minimize the size of the Mikey inset, please? It covers his mouth while his video is rolling.Back from break, with one Alberta boy staying and one going. Tyler is headed home, and Billy looks like he's ready to collapse on his way back to the couch. It's awfully harsh to see one off performance end Tyler's time on the show, as he's consistently rocked in his last half dozen efforts, going all the way back to the top 100 auditions. Consistency and professionalism were the hallmarks of Tyler's style, and more than a few folks have mentioned that he was kinda easy on the eyes. In any event, he's out and sings "My Girl" to end the show. Is anyone else wondering how much Tyler wants to sing this song again after getting ripped for it last night? After another night of tough cuts, six Idols hang in for another week. Next Monday at 8:00 p.m. on CTV, Summertime Hits will be the theme, so tune in and see if any of the Idols are fans of Mungo Jerry.
